TRATTO advances knowledge by investigating for the first time the characteristics of digital and green jobs and their association with different metrics of environmental and economic performance through the exploitation of novel data sources. In particular, the project makes four contributions. First, it improves the definition and measurement of digital and green jobs in the EU and, more specifically, in Italy. Second, it investigates the quality of digital and green jobs. This allows TRATTO to provide insights on the “just” dimension of the twin transition, as it emerges in the workplace. Third, it maps the supply of digital and green skills and it evaluates its local impact on industrial dynamics, economic and environmental performances. Fourth, it examines the effects of digital and green jobs on firm innovation and performance, considering the hiring of workers engaged in specific occupations as traces of the adoption of digital and green technologies that workers are expected to master in the workplace.
TRATTO is based on novel methodologies and data to identify digital and green jobs. We will exploit recent European Skills, Competences, Qualifications and Occupations classifications of digital and green skills that can be matched with finely-grained occupational groups. We also plan a major data collection effort, based on data science techniques to exploit a large archive of tertiary education programmes in Italy, which includes information on skills and finely-grained occupations where students are most likely to find a job. To achieve the project research aims, a unique TRATTO composite repository of data is then created, merging definitions of digital and green occupations with other datasets. These include an EU-wide survey on working conditions, linked employer-employee data for the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, and data about the industrial dynamics, economic and environmental performance of Italian provinces.
